HOW I WORK
“I believe the strongest work emerges through collaboration.”
As a director, I create spaces where artists feel supported to explore, contribute ideas and take creative risks. While I always have a clear sense of where a production is heading, I am interested in discovering the journey together, drawing on the ideas, instincts and expertise of the people in the room.
I enjoy the process of building something layer by layer, from the first conversation through to performance. I am particularly fascinated by how performance, music, movement, lighting, sound and design connect to create immersive and emotionally engaging experiences for an audience.
MY PRACTICE
“My work is shaped by experiences beyond directing alone.”
Alongside directing, my background as a teacher, writer, songwriter, performer and workshop facilitator allows me to approach projects from multiple perspectives. I am interested not only in what exists on the page, but in what exists between the lines, exploring how story, character, music and emotion can be brought fully to life in performance.
These experiences help me support a wide range of artists and participants, adapt to different working environments and create processes that are accessible, collaborative and creatively ambitious.
WHAT MATTERS TO ME
“The most meaningful work begins with people.”
I value rehearsal rooms where everyone feels respected, supported and genuinely listened to. I believe the best ideas emerge when people feel safe to contribute, ask questions, challenge assumptions and share ownership of the creative process.
For me, theatre is built through trust, generosity and collaboration. Whether working with performers, creative teams, communities or audiences, I am interested in creating environments where people feel valued, connected and invested in the work being made together.
MY JOURNEY
“Theatre has always been about people, connection and transformation.”
My journey into theatre has been shaped by performance, teaching, international experiences, community work and personal growth. Each chapter has influenced the way I lead rooms, build relationships and approach storytelling.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Director of Heathers, Freaky Friday and 13 Going on 30
“I have had the pleasure of working with many wonderful creative associates over my career but working with the remarkable Ben Johnson was truly at a whole other level. He is the perfect collaborator with all departments. His attention to detail and kindness in working with actors of all ages is a marvel to witness. I fully recommend him for any and all future creative opportunities. Stop reading this and hire him. You will thank me later.”
Producer, H+H Productions
“I had the pleasure of working with Ben on both Nerds and Freaky Friday and their impact on each production was invaluable. They combine exceptional organisational skills with creative insight, helping to bring out the best in both the work and the people around them.
Calm, collaborative, and highly effective under pressure, they consistently create an environment where cast and crew feel supported, motivated, and able to thrive.
What sets them apart is their ability to balance high standards with genuine care for others. Their leadership, attention to detail, and positive energy made them an integral part of both productions, and I would gladly work with them again.”
